Paper Recommends

While we’re in lockdown we’ve been catching up with some great films, books and other stuff. Here are some of the highlights :

Mali Blues

This blew us away as it follows some Mali musicians including  Fatoumata Diawara, Bassekou Kouyaté, Master Soumy and Ahmed Ag Kaedi. As well as amazing music and cinematography, it tells of the country’s fight against fundamentalism and how music continues.

Shaun Ryder and The Salford Sioux

Manchester’s favourite dirty uncle does what he does best and spins a yarn over some great animation. Who knew there was a Sioux Native American camp in the middle of Salford?

Turning the Art World Inside Out

A great doc on outsider art and some of the characters who make it. Humbling and awe-inspiring in equal measures.

How Music Works – David Byrne

We’re halfway through this as the Talking Heads front man, art  rock pioneer and musical super brain offers up part autobiography and half the how, why, wheres of popular music through the ages. Absolutely fascinating.
