Fast becoming the hottest social gathering in West Yorkshire, Flash Atkins Music’s monthly ‘Calder Del Sol Sessions’ at Barbary’s are bringing a bit of the classic Ibizan vibe to Mytholmroyd in the Upper Calder Valley.

With a soundtrack covering all corners of the record shop provided by Flash & the occasional guests, this after work social shindig is a must for music & craft beer lovers alike.

For the month of June it was Paper’s #1 brew maker Chris Massey Music’s turn to join a top crowd with top musical vibes on the hottest day of the year so far.
It was so good they even made the sunshine instantly disappear pretty much as soon as it started.

Part 1 of the 4 hour mega fest is avail here…tuck in for a fest of sounds of jazz, balearic, cosmic, outsider pop, sun drenched soul, funk, chuggy disco and of course a few choice Paper cuts.

Prepare to be blown away as two men sit down and play records back to back on a brisk weekday morning. Paper Recordings’ main players snuck in to West Yorkshire’s finest bar, Barbary’s and brought the heat as they weaved through ambient, afro, wonk, desert blues, disco. street soul house and disco. It’s a party on a plate without having to leave your home.

Paper DJ Tag Team # 2

The Paper DJ Tag Team #2 has landed.

Selectors this time round come in the form of Chris Massey with a few celeb pals who don’t move much, BB & Richie V from their very own Supernature Disco rave den then Anoraak drops the heat from his studio which will make you salivate over his synth collection! EXCLUSIVES

papercuts #3

It’s been a while since the last Paper Cuts so we’ve got a stockpile of bonafide, road tested bombs that hit every every button labeled ‘rave’. From subterranean acid to disco bangers, it’s a collection that stretches two and half years at the coal face of house.

From Norway we have Ralph Myerz‘s epic fourteen minute ‘Acid 4 Eddie’, Tromsø legend Doc L Jnr’s wonky ‘Twilight’, Diskobeistet’s nu-disco ‘Birkelunden’ and ‘Gammal Morro’ plus young guns Rave-Enka and De Fantastiske To. Closer to home the Flash Atkins Gilles Peterson endorsed ‘Drug Empire’ and Andrew Weatherall favourite ‘Acid House Creator’ make an appearance, Daco brings his nu tech-soul and 2 Billion Beats do their thing. Kit Tacchini goes deep, Kimo shows his colours as one to watch, Weedyman drives it home and Chris Massey’s mix of Richard Seaborne still does damage.

We’ve also got exclusives from Neil Quigley and Mezman who take things deep and dance floor plus Leon Sweet’s Zed that walks the line between disco, techno, house and old school beautifully.

Overall it’s a damn fine snapshot of where the label has been and where it’s going with music that no discerning DJ should be without.

Paper Recordings….the story continues.

Daco – Vostok EP

1. Meine Killer feat. Die Hexen (Original Mix)
2. Meine Killer feat. Die Hexen (Live Mix)
3. Struck Out
4. Dreadnought

MIXMAG DISCO SINGLE OF THE MONTH

The mighty Daco is back on Paper after a move to Spain and time spent sailing the high seas. He sent us a whole load of fresh music so we’ve taken the best and will be releasing it over a series of three EPs before collating them on an album later in the year.

Meine Killer launches things and it’s a quality deep house track that is soulful and catchy with enough wallop to rock any floor. Die Hexen’s vocal has a touch of Propaganda’s Claudia Brücken to give it a 80s Eastern European flavour. There is slinky bass, live drums and a chorused guitar that nags all the way through for some main room clout.

The live mix keeps all the same qualities of the original but takes the alley named “Boogie”. Live congas, percussion, disco guitar and the bass is given a bit more head to do it’s thing. It’s strictly analogue business here and if you want it live, it’s all here baby.

Struck Out goes all the way down the disco route and it’s the sound of a tight-as-you-like house band on their night off having some fun when nobody’s watching. 70s synths, agogo a plenty and a heavy funk vibe makes this music for dance floors that flash.

Finally Dreadnought saves the heaviest till last and it’s future proto-balearic prog business. Arps chug away with a motorkik beat before breaking to a chord progression that is set to “build” and is the tone for the rest of the track. It’s got ALFOS and Prins Thomas written all over it and comes off like a lost Baldelli classic that would have shaken Cosmic to it’s foundations. Expect beard strokers to break their life long dance ban and ravers to lose their shit.

Hot Toddy (Crazy P) – Pretty impressive stuff, great musicality running through this EP.

Red Rack ’em – Digging Struck Out. Dope. Dreadnought is tasty too…

Sean Johnston – (ALFOS / Hardway Bros) – On a roll boys!

Neil Quigley – Fantastic EP! Dreadnought is a monster, and I’m the newest member of Die Hexen’s fan club. Awesome!

Mighty Mouse – Love Struck Out is really nice.

Gemini Brothers – This EP is absolutely AMAZING! Love all of them!

Pete Herbert – Fantastic!!

Julian Sanza – Lovely vibes! Diggin!

Severino Panzetta (Horse Meat Disco) – YES GROOVY!!

DJ Rocca – I like Struck out and Dreadnought. Very good tracks

Chris Massey – Bigger than Flash Atkins’ skid marks.

Nuno Cacho – This is mind blowing. Love it!

Andy (Inland Knights) – Struck Out is awesome….def in the box.

Ed Mahon – The EP gets better with each tune! Loving ‘Struck Out’ and already stocking it up for the Summer sets. Dreadnought is quality and will be a Cowbell favourite from the off!

Aldrin Zouk – Dreadnought & Meine Killer right up my alley! Thanks!

Bad Barbie Beats – Struck Out Floats my boat.

Get Down Edits – Excellent Stuff from Paper once again, Meine Killer (Original Mix) jumps right out, looking forward to testing all these x

Weedyman – Kanaga’s Revenge

Weedyman steps up for his debut Paper EP entitled “Kanaga’s Revenge” and it’s a bobby blinder. There are three original cuts of warped out sub-tropical house music that will find their place with the 7am in a Berlin basement kind of jocks and forward thinking clubs everywhere.

BMBJ gets the rave ball rolling with a big riff from the off and never letting up until the end. The track has a hypnotic, druggy vibe with burbling acid working the groove and it’s basement bugging all the way.

Ondo Ondo Anda nods a wink to Detroit and is a 9 minute opus to really get lost in. Warped out saxophone and cosmic stabs surf across the 4/4 and it’s a lockdown as the track ebbs and flows for maximum head mashing.

Feel It brings things back down to earth with a more sleazy ‘n smooth approach perfect for setting the tone early doors. Lush pads, catchy stabs, a familiar sample and just a hint of a 303 brings up the rear for quality, timeless deep house.

There’s an ice cool remix from Mr Sunny Bigler himself, Leon Sweet who notches it up ever so slightly to take things more late night and soulful whilst still retaining the vibe of the original.

One for the house heads.

Harri (SubClub)– “Yep, liking these!”

DJ Sneak– “GROOVY STUFF!”

Neil Quigley – “Classy EP which nods to the past whilst rooted in the present.”

Danielle Moore (Crazy P): “Love this package. Really lovely to hear some solid melodic grooves with quality production. A breakthrough in a world of relentless wumptie”

Hot Toddy (Crazy P): “nice ep, BMBJ is repetitive in all the right places, and my fav, liking the Leon Sweet mix as well”

Ruben & Ra – “HOT!”

Billy Scurry – “Digging the solid house vibes on this one, def one for the basements!”

George Summers (Midnight Riot): “Awesome package – full support”

Severino (Horse Meat Disco): “This is LOVELY!”

Kahuun – “Nice deep hypnotic release clearly inspired by the “old” masters from Chicago. Onda Ondo Anda is the favourite which reminds me of early dj Sneak with some afrobeat elements”

Pathaan – “Love it !!! All the tracks are HOT.”

Chris Massey – “This is rightly so absolutely massive & huge! Well in the bag…”

Shane Johnson (Fish Go Deep) – “Onda Ondo Anda working very well for me here. A gritty, hypnotic groove that takes it’s time but develops throughout. Will be playing.”

Fingerman: “Awesome EP. Love it all. Leon’s mix is a treat also :)”

Joe Morris (Clandestino) – “Really like the deep vibe on Feel It.”

Mezman – Le Deepend

We’re getting prepped & ready to leave the cold Winter nights behind us with these two cuts from Mezman.

Le Deepend filters into action as soon as you press play and much like its partner on this EP it’s got a warm & throbbing low end in spades. A simple loop is used to great effect with a subtle & cleverly used Aretha vocal to give it that little bit of extra disco dust.

Heatwave gets into action right from the off with a slap bass thats packs enough wobble to make Larry Graham proud. It’s classic jacked out disco percussion cracks in all the right places before we’re treated to a hell of a breakdown that builds before dropping right back in to the good stuff.

Both tracks are certified killers and pack a shallop when they’ve been dropping at Paper parties.

Chez Damier:
“I SIMPLY THINK ITS HOT! I would play both mixes”

Oliver $:
“Nice one will play it!”

Harri (Sub Club):
“Can use heatwave for sure!”

Jim Baron (Crazy P/Ron Basejam):

Stuart Knight (Toolroom):
“LE DEEPEND is the one for me”

Sleazy McQueen:
“Packs a whallop!”

Chris Massey:
“This is without a doubt absolute massive stuff! Solid disco licked house workout vibes that’ll sound boss on a big rig.”

Fingerman:
“Fantastic tracky disco gear. Both will get a rinsing :)”

Leon Sweet:
“Quality jams… i’m a Mezman fan. Just in time for Oslo too. All over it :)”

Somerville & Wilson:

Badbarbie Beats (Kane Fm & Cruise FM):
“Good Time Vibes, Perky little groover x”

Wrighty (Soul Buggin’):

James Rod – Cosmic Japan EP

Spain’s very own wobbly disco master James Rod makes his solo debut on Paper Disco with 3 tracks of (deep breath) cosmic-disco-funk-balearic-banger-business. Let’s just say these are primed and ready for some serious dance moves.

Cosmic Japan gets the party started and it is over seven minutes of pure sun soaked ace-ness. There’s a a bubbling NRG bass, laser stabbing synths and pads to die for so climb aboard, next stop the all night discotheque!

Next up, Double Night Straight heads straight for the bongos and 80s drum machine. Before long the pads & synths start to bounce and fizz before the thumping bass gets serious. If there’s not a strobe running while this bangs out complain to the management.

Closing off Night Stratus slows things down slightly and slips a few microdots into your Cinzano for truly hypnotic disco chugger. There’s a massive off kilter dirty bass plus a massive jug of pitched down slo-mo drug funk to get lost in.

Ron Basjam (Crazy P) – “Jolly good”

Fingerman – “Solid Italo business from James. Excellente!”

Billy Scurry – “OOOFFF!!! Yep, these’ll most definitely do! In the words of Rodney Trotter… “Cos Mick!””

Severino Panzetta (Horse Meat Disco) – “YES the first 2 are BIG”

Get Down Edits – “Very Nice, Lovely Space Disco vibe to all 3 jams x”

Anthony Mansfield – “Fun for the whole dancefloor!”

Chris Massey – “Its finally here!!! Cosmic Japan & Double Night are big winners”

80s Child – “The Rodmeister always delivers!”

2 Billion Beats – Sold My Soul

2 Billion Beats are back with an almighty slab of disco licked house music that is cooler than a cucumber straight out the fridge!

Sold My Soul is the first release from their forthcoming album on Paper and sets its stall out right from the word go! Synths stabs that instantly grab you, smooth bass, amazing vocals and also a big old hands aloft piano breakdown that ensures the rafters will be heavily shaken! Plenty more greatness to come from their album in Spring but this should keep you well & truly topped up in the meant time.

On remix duty is Paper’s boy wonder Chris Massey who takes the party subterranean & ups the oomph factor with a full on stomper & dub version. They both demand a full dance floors attention and will guarantee to give the PA system a good going over.

Hold tight suckas!

Ron Basejam: “Chris’s dub is doing the job!”

Daco: “The original mix is fantastic! Good work guys! Chris’s Dub Mix is a winner too!”

DJ Rocca: “Chris’ dub here for me”

Will Tramp: “Big track. Playing the Massey remix at Homoelectric tonight!”

Tronik Youth: “Yes…Massey’s dub mic for me!”

Fingerman: “Original mix floats my boat. Very tasty!”

Duncan Gray/Tici Taci: “Both of Chris’ mixes are great, esp the dub. Thanks! Supporting”

De Fantastiske To: “Nice poppy vibe on this one, original could be a good springtime warmer. Massey´s melting dub for the floors!”

Get Down Edits: “Excellent Stuff once again from Paper, Chris Massey remixes doing the business!”

Billy Scurry: “Great original, but Mr Massey moves it into a different arena.. Great vibes!!”
