Daco – Vostok EP

1. Meine Killer feat. Die Hexen (Original Mix)
2. Meine Killer feat. Die Hexen (Live Mix)
3. Struck Out
4. Dreadnought

MIXMAG DISCO SINGLE OF THE MONTH

The mighty Daco is back on Paper after a move to Spain and time spent sailing the high seas. He sent us a whole load of fresh music so we’ve taken the best and will be releasing it over a series of three EPs before collating them on an album later in the year.

Meine Killer launches things and it’s a quality deep house track that is soulful and catchy with enough wallop to rock any floor. Die Hexen’s vocal has a touch of Propaganda’s Claudia Brücken to give it a 80s Eastern European flavour. There is slinky bass, live drums and a chorused guitar that nags all the way through for some main room clout.

The live mix keeps all the same qualities of the original but takes the alley named “Boogie”. Live congas, percussion, disco guitar and the bass is given a bit more head to do it’s thing. It’s strictly analogue business here and if you want it live, it’s all here baby.

Struck Out goes all the way down the disco route and it’s the sound of a tight-as-you-like house band on their night off having some fun when nobody’s watching. 70s synths, agogo a plenty and a heavy funk vibe makes this music for dance floors that flash.

Finally Dreadnought saves the heaviest till last and it’s future proto-balearic prog business. Arps chug away with a motorkik beat before breaking to a chord progression that is set to “build” and is the tone for the rest of the track. It’s got ALFOS and Prins Thomas written all over it and comes off like a lost Baldelli classic that would have shaken Cosmic to it’s foundations. Expect beard strokers to break their life long dance ban and ravers to lose their shit.

Hot Toddy (Crazy P) – Pretty impressive stuff, great musicality running through this EP.

Red Rack ’em – Digging Struck Out. Dope. Dreadnought is tasty too…

Get Down Edits – Excellent Stuff from Paper once again, Meine Killer (Original Mix) jumps right out, looking forward to testing all these x

Kimo – Kindara EP

The global sound of house music is alive and well and here’s the proof with our first signing from Indonesia. Double Deer’s Kimo brings four tracks of crisp deepness and vibe heavy disco that absolutely smashes it.

First up Born Out is a bonafide disco thumper that builds around live drums, a nagging disco bass and acid line before the tension is released to an incessant piano riff and swooping strings. Then it’s mayhem as the chord changes and arps add to the mix as it drives to the peak. This has been road tested by the Paper DJs over the past few months and never fails to take the roof off.

Bow Down is a change of pace and features Kal with a super hooky vocal. It’s a fusion of the Far East and balearica with Kimo’s trademark arps and dance floor dynamics. There are guitars and synth lines a plenty plus Rhodes and live drums that steadily suck you in to a hazy world of space disco.

Whirl takes a more hypnotic route that is nailed down by a cowbell and analogue bass. Gamelan steel drums give it that evocative Eastern flavour as it hypnotises you in to a delayed break when things get serious. The riff keeps on with leads, pads and synths for a track that is fresh, dancefloor heavy and dripping in atmosphere.

Finally First Kick is a more straight forward house track with a riffing organ that develops in to pushing synth and walking bass for middle of the night head down tackle.

Justin Robertson – Fabulous EP… all cracking.

Bill Brewster – Like Born Out, will definitely use that.

Sean Johnston (ALFOS / Hardway Bros) – Nicemoments on this ep

Leon Sweet – Born Out is an absolute stonker. Super strong debut on Paper, top work all round.

De Fantastiske To – Folk Og Ferie EP

Our Norwegian friends De Fantastiske To deliver the goods once more in this slam dunk/home run/golden goal (delete as necessary) of an EP. If you like serious body shaking house music then prepare to hold on tight!

Folk Og Ferie starts off and its all kinds of ace-ness, marrying balearic tinged disco with jacking Chicago type house all sprinkled with that special Norsk cosmic dust. You don’t know whether to raise your hands, blaze up a fat one, order a cocktail or just dance, dance, dance! Maybe try all four?

Teknokofte runs out of the gate with snapping Roland 909 percussion and its sights firmly set on melting your face. A hooky bassline that’s drenched in squelch sits hand in hand with stubby strings & jazz infused chords.

Orgeldoner slows things down to take you into a purple haze of blessed out yacht rocking balearic disco. 80’s bassline with hooky chords, sustained string action and of course that signature Norwegian special sauce ties it up nicely.

Sunshine feat. Jay Nemor is like the long lost brother of a Gil Scott Heron track with it’s super laid back grooves. Dreamy rhodes, jacked up percussion and a sweet vocal make this fit perfectly into the “Nu-jazz balearic disco lounge house whatevs” category.

Mark Farina – Nice cuts”

Get Down Edits – “Really nice release from Paper once again”

Space Ranger – “Perfekt summer-jam”

Andy Inland Knights – “Nice release …liking all cuts”

Bad Barbiebeats – “Solid little EP full of Chuggy, Loopy, Loveliness. Feeling the Robotic, Filthy, Grind of “Teknokofte” most”

Groovement Soul – “Feeling the hypnotic vibe of Folk Og Ferie”

Q-Burns Abstract Message – “Nice, clean sounds throughout. Liking the dreamy arpeggiators in ‘Folk Og Ferie’.

Robot 84 – “Killer EP, every track a winner… Luv it!! I’ll play every track…”

Bottin – Orgeldöner

Neil Diablo – “Solid groovey ep. love Orgeldoner. Is that kebab related?”

Rave-enka – Påfuglen EP

After providing hefty remix action for Richard Seaborne and behind the massive Gimme Some Dim Sum as one half of De Fantastiske To, Ravi Brunsvik steps up to drop his debut solo EP of the Norwegian good stuff on Paper.

Antibac kicks things off and to quote Chris in the office “it builds like an absolute bastard!”. Nearly 10 minutes of solid thunder is accompanied by jacking percussion and icy synth stabs whilst the beat just keeps on trucking. This one will grab you before you realise what’s happened.

Sur Sennep takes things to a late night discotheque located somewhere between The Hacienda and a Croatian festival. An almost acid house set up leads the way before evolving into the kind of balearic disco that can only be dreamed up in Norway. There are plenty of hooky synths, old skool keys and a bassline that squelches. Good times ahead when you unleash this..

Closing the EP off Påfuglen picks up the baton and takes things to the chill out room. Minimalistic and stripped back yet still full of enough synth squeaks, tweaks & bleeps to keep you hooked and intrigued. If Kraftwerk opened an opium den then this would surely be on their in-house playlist.

Sean Johnston – Chris Massey sent me this ages ago – I didn’t label it properly and I have been dying to know what it was – mystery solved. It’s fucking brilliant and has been a staple of 2015 ALFOS parties. KILLER!

Ron Basejam (Crazy P) – It’s a doozy.

Wrighty – Loving Antibac, groovy as fuck.

Bad Barbie Beats – Cosmic chuggy loveliness.

Robot 84 – Secrets EP

e’ve not been using the C word for a while round these parts but that’s not to say we’ve gone off it. This knockout 3 track EP from Paper newcomer Robot 84 has rekindled the love of all things CHUG.

Secrets gets things rolling and is driven along by an arp bassline whilst spaced out percussion hits spin & sparkle alongside reverb drenched pads & strings that look to the stars.

If Secrets is the journey then Automatic lands you slap bang in the middle of the dance floor with a straight up, heads down house vibe. Imagine underground Manchester crossed with Baldelli’s Cosmic Club and you’re headed in the right direction.

Ego is a darker affair than its predecessors and more tuned for the 4am crowd. No messing house music, it trucks & thunders along with stubby brass sections coming in here & there, all topped off with spaced out delays & reverb to make it a worthy addition to this interstellar EP.

Support from:

Leftside Wobble – The Italo bump and grind of ‘Secrets’ is working it’s magic on me.

B.G.Baarregaard – Partysvenskenes Dans EP

Paper’s Scandinavian connection continues with this release from one of Oslo’s finest residents. Although hailing from Reykjavik, B.G Baarregaard now resides in in Norway’s capital and its influence is clearly stamped all over this brilliant EP.

Partysvenskenes Dans has the kind of warm ‘n wobbly happenings that we’ve come to know and love from the scandi disco output. Plenty of resonance & space with a hint of Inspector Norse mean this treads on the right side of camp & kitsch whilst managing to pack enough of a stomp to ensure it blows up a dance floor.

(Got Me) Runnin’ jumps on a plane and heads straight to the late 80’s / early 90’s Manchester club scene. Big piano stabs and a classic vocal make it a real late night jacked out affair with everything here from the glory years of clubbing.

Konur Go Karlar seems to take on board both its predecessors to deliver a cut that is drenched in cosmicness as well as a nod to classic UK house. Simple, down the middle & hooky there’s enough going on to please those that favour discos and late night dancing dens.

Sleazy McQueen – “BG’s work is marked by some of the finest production quality in the modern disco scene. Partysvenskenes Dans sounds like BG’s been drinking the Norwegian-Disco kool-aid!”

Nutritious – “Undeniably fantastical.”

Richard Seaborne – Times Are Hard

After previous releases on Paper and Paper Disco, the man who asked “Is This Acid?” (as charted by Todd Terje and featured on Tensnake’s All Gone Pete Tong comp) returns with Times Are Hard.

The original is a post neon 80’s style workout that wouldn’t sound out of place if you were driving a white Testarossa down the California freeway at night. A chopped disco loop gives way to a laid back smooth bass line with delay drenched synth stabs before the sultry vocal delivers.

Paper’s head tea boy and pasty lover Chris Massey throws all the above out of the window and drops a solid 4am whopper with the wobbliest & wonkiest off key synth and bass line this side of his home-town Bolton. It’s already had Emperor Machine asking to do an edit so handle this one with care!

Our Norwegian friends De Fantastiske To drop a mix that could be at home in the basement clubs of New York. It’s simple, jacking & slacking with hypnotic synths alongside the original’s vocal. This is heads down house music with a slight look up only to have a blast a poppers.

DJ Rocca – – “Chris Massey remix blowed my mind!”

Mugwump – “The Chris Massey remix is fucking bonkers.”

Somerville & Wilson – “Another corking release from Paper Recordings .Chris Masseys remix is our fav although De Fantastike remix comes a close second .

Russell Deeks – “Solid nu-disco vibes on the orig but liking DFT remix best”

Leon Sweet – Situation Stable EP

South coast resident Leon is back from rocking Croatia with two super good tracks that reflect both sides of the dance music coin.

“Above” is a fine slice of nu-disco to kick things off. It’s a kick heavy cut up with P funk bass, Chic guitar, live drums, sampled vocals and a healthy dose of leftfield wonk that has already proved itself at this year’s Electric Elephant.

On the flip “Below” takes things synthy, dark and hypnotic with congas to give it that all important funk element. It builds with 5th stabs, a healthy bottom end and enough melody to keep things interesting but it’s a 4am moment all the way.

Harri (Sub Club) – Digging these

Q-Burns Abstract Message – Below is one superb slink!

Tom (2 Billion Beats) – The many facets of Mr. Sweet! Below is right up my street, it definitely needs to be in Andy Weatherall’s record bag.

Marius Sommerfeldt (De Fantastiske To) – Really digging! I prefer the slightly more funky “Above”.

Sophie Lloyd – Groovy

Joe Morris – Tropical Highway EP

Joe has been releasing music on some of the best UK labels of the moment including EDSC and Is It Balearic? and now the man from Clandestino is back with the follow up to his last EP just in time for summer. Tropical Highway follows the same format with one deep house houser and two gorgeous balearic nodders.

“Always” leads the pack and is aimed at that 3am moment when you’re parked in front of the speaker and living for the moment. Crisp reverbed percussion and a shuffling sub lay the foundations for keys that look towards Detroit. An old school sample helps build the track with strings and pads until the drop is reached and not a moment too soon, that kind of intensity can only be kept up for so long! Then it’s back down to the business of getting stuck in.

“Elysium” has a side chained chorused pad, gentle percussive keys, strings, a trippy vocal sample and the only thing missing is the sound of the lapping sea. It weaves it’s hypnotic magic as the synths and pads play counter melodies off each other sounding like a lost 90s Cafe Del Mar classic which is no bad thing in our book!

“Fireflies” carries on the same tip with filtered pads that are heavy on atmosphere as the bass moves around them. A stabby synth pushes the track along as the drums build and drop with the keys giving it that balearic hook.

So when you’re watching the sun go down and enjoying the perfect Ibiza / Croatia / Thailand / Yorkshire (delete where appropriate) moment , the Tropical Highway EP will be the soundtrack!

Rocky (X-Press 2) – Elysium and Fireflies are the ones.

Mutant Disco Radio Show – Lovely release. All 3 tracks are magic.

Research – Miss Ya

Paper Disco continues its march onwards with an EP from Research. The band were recently heard on Trash The Wax and Day By Day on Paper Recordings last year had Psychemagik sprinkling their remix fairy dust.

Miss Ya takes things back to the 80s with big drums, off kilter bass and a straight ahead groove. Add moody vocals, lush pads for the chorus, a scattering of distorted guitars, Rhodes plus super good production and its a heavy track for DJs who know what’s what.

The Go-Go Time Mix takes things moodier for a more stripped back dubbier version but keeps all the rhythm in place. The vocal is used sparingly with the Rhodes, guitar, piano and congas all taking their turn to keep the track moving along as it jams out to the end touching on classic tracks as it goes.

It’s a refreshing take on disco that isn’t using the good times of the Paradise Garage as its inspiration but reaches for darker and more interesting corners.

Ron Basejam (Crazy P) – Well wonk-funk. Nice one!

Tim Love Lee – Really feeling this.

Get Down Edits – Feeling this guys!

Cosmic Disco – Nice chuggy discoid vibes! Early doors slap bass tackle. Thanks!

DJ Rocca – Go Go Time Mix for me.

Feodor AllRight – Go-Go Time mix is a cracker!

Billy Scurry – Sterling dancefloor vibes, really digging!

Neil Scott (El Diablo Social Club) – NIce traxxxx.

Joe Morris (Clandestino) – These are dope!

Dr Rob – It`s the rolling pianos on the “Go-Go Time” mix that work for me.

Advokkat – Cool track.

This Is Why We Dance – Go-Go Time mix for me here.

Deep South Audio – Both tunes show that the band have a swag in there sound . For me ill be sliding the remix late in to the DJ set when the lights are dark and the vibe is deep.

Ste Hodge – Moody & sassy in equal measures – Brilliant stuff!

Frank Lihaug -Nice and funky!

Black Mighty Wax – These grooves have infected my mind!

Ed Mahon (Cowbell Radio) – The original is instantly one of my favourite tunes of the year! Pure sleaze, and definitely the kind of track you could build a whole set around! The Go-Go mix is also strong, that piano came out of nowhere and nearly floored me! Definitely getting hammered all Summer!

Mutant Disco Radio Show – Go-Go Time mix for me.

2 Billion Beats – Revolutions / Warm Feeling EP

It’s been a long time coming but 2 Billion Beats’ debut album is ready to pop and here’s the second EP to be taken from it.

Revolutions struts its way onto the dance floor for a track that is deep, solid and aimed squarely between the eyes. It features some heavy cosmic squelches & squeaks before an arp hits to shift things up a gear to the setting marked ‘heavy”. This will take you to the stars & back whilst stopping off in the basements for a top up.

Warm Feeling is a melting pot of jacking-disco-jazz tinged house music with the silky vocals of Dieter that perfectly partners up with the soaring pads, busty Rhodes & firecracker percussion. It delivers a surefire selection for all the party jocks.

Norway’s Magnus International steps in fresh from one of the albums of the year on Prins Thomas’ Full Pupp . He takes Revolutions and straddles techno and house for a mix that is pure peak time heads down tackle for tougher floors.

Finally Italy’s DJ Steevo goes full on dance floor nu-disco shaker for his mix of Warm Feeling. He takes the B-line in to an NRG direction, thumps the drums and lets the Rhodes do it’s work whilst using synths and delayed vocals to give the track dynamics.

Justin Robertson: “Top stuff on the Magnus remix”

Mugwump: “Loving the original of Revolutions”

Sean Johnston/Hardway Bros: “DJ Steevo doing the biz!”

Discodromo: “Great! love the Magnus International remix”

Alkalino: “Revolutions original and Magnus International Remix are the ones for me, thks!”

DJ Rocca: “Really like it, especially the Magnus International remix”

Fingerman: “Great stuff! Loving the remixes too! Roll on the LP :)”

Reza Attar: “Love the DJ Steevo mix!”

DJ Paulette: “Revolutions – Hot Since 82 must surely be peeing his pants over this one! Warm Feeling is a curve ball – wonky synth disco.
Revolutions – is a loopfest for dark corners and the DJ Steevo remix is a slo-mo disco banger!”

Duncan Gray: “Wow, loving that Magnus remix of Revolutions. nice one. thanks!”

Ed Mahon (Cowbbell Radio) : “Revolutions is a sure fire winner, big hit on dancefloors! Loving the DJ Steevo remix of Warm Feeling too, excellent stuff! Welcome back”
