9pm plus Q & A

This fascinating film tells the story of how a group of friends in the remote cities of Bergen and Tromsø gave birth to a unique sound that went on to re-define dance music as it is known today and transform a country in the process. The generation of DJs and musicians it inspired have gone on to conquer the world. Starring Prins Thomas, Annie, Bjørn Torske, Lindstrøm, Idjut Boys and Bill Brewster amongst many others.

AFTER PARTY £8/10: 10pm – 3am
Junction House, 578 Kingsland Road, London, E8 4AH

DJs – Bjørn Torske & Mental Overdrive

The official Northern Disco Lights after-party has two of Norway’s originators playing all night long at a brand new Dalston basement venue, Junction House.

Bjørn Torske is one of the world’s most unique producers and often called the Godfather of Norwegian dance music (or more recently the Codfather) with people like Todd Terje and Prins Thomas lining up to work with him. Behind the decks he stitches together leftfield disco wonk, house, techno, psychedelia and curveballs in to a dancefloor meltdown.

Alongside is the man who can claim to have kick-started the whole scene, Mental Overdrive has also witten the sound track for Northern Disco Lights. Although best known for techno Per Martinsen can slip between genres behind the decks and in the studio and continues to get booked everywhere from LA to Berlin.

This is a rare opportunity to hear two of Norway’s groundbreaking electronic pioneers performing together all night long.

Kooky & Damoon – EP2

After providing big hitters on Trash The Wax 2 & 3 as well as a damn fine debut EP, Kooky & Damoon return to the Paper fold with Niki Kand on vocals to deliver three disco licked nuggets.

There She Flies is all about the low end baby; it’s got warm & wobbly bass with a few peaks & squeaks teamed up with some Nile style guitar and classic piano stabs. Use this one to set your stall out.

We Go Dancing channels some inner Shaft riffs & Stevie style chords with a bassline that hooks you in straight away. Adding the fantastic vocal makes the whole thing destined to be played on a yacht party under the Croatian moon.

Closing things off Take Me High still has bags of groove but takes the party late night. Laser toms, strings, badass bass plus a few surprises make this one sound like the cousin of a Paradise Garage escapee.

Daco – Castillo EP

The man known to his Mum as Dave is back with another space themed EP and yet again it’s four tracks of immaculately produced tech-soul bombs. We are particularly chuffed to have Basil Clarke from legendary Manchester band Yargo delivering vocals on A Little More Volume which is a thumping guitar driven wallop of a tune that hits all the rave buttons without getting boxed in by any of them.

The live mix makes some subtle changes with drums that have a bit more groove, added synths and tweaked production but the result is the same : dancefloor devastation.

Skirting is tech-houser that wears a big acid house grin. Anchored round an acid B-line it burbles and squeaks it’s way over drums and congas that swing like Baloo going toe to toe with King Louie plus added tropicala. It will bring the sunshine to the dingiest clubs and the darkest of basements to outdoor festivals.

Finally Daco does his psychedelic prog disco thing on Saving Grace. Loose broken drums, octave jumping arps and some seriously deranged programming make this a trip to dealt with carefully but the rewards will be cosmic!

Mighty Mouse: “Love this EP, superb!”

Julian Sanza: “Saving Grace its the kind of tunes i love to play, sparse, electronic, funky/techno and rave vibes”

Vinny Villbass: “Nice nice nice!”

Sean Johnston: “Bonkers!”

Alkalino: “Raw, dirty… I like A Little More Volume Original +Live Mix are awesome! Saving Grace is also nice. thks!”

Somerville & Wilson: “Great EP from Daco! Really love the grinding indie feel of A Little More Volume. And the Cosmic Acid of Saving Grace! Both the standouts for us. Both shall be played in our sets!”

Gemini Brothers: “This is just an amazing EP! Outstanding sounds for any summer sets! Full support!”

Cosmic Capers Radio Show: “Saving Grace is quality, a trip for sure. A Little More Volume Original mix is a great piece of music, i’m really into it!”

BG Baarregaard – Aalone EP

Icelandic groove warrior B.G. Baarregaard is back on Paper Disco with an EP written after a move to the Norwegian town of Aal. Avoiding the use of samples it’s modern flipped out good time music for feet and floors wherever they may be.

AMR is modern disco with a popping NRG acid bass, funky keys, some Nile guitar and everything you need for a disco ball moment. Just when you think you’ve got it nailed the chord changes and off it goes again.

From the first bass and chords of Kulturhuset you know summer is well and truly on the way. If house music wore a grin then this would have one a mile wide. Stabbing chords, jumping drums and tuned percussion bring the sunshine.

Finally Mestringskatten is the deepest track of the package but still has that 80s synth sound. It’s in beach bar mode with plenty of twinkling and balearic sensibility ideal for sinking a Pina Colada on the Adriatic. So when you’re sat there thinking I know this this one, well this is it!

Yam Who? : “Bjorn providing the special goody bag!”

Sleazy McQueen : “My favorite Iceland-cum-Ål transplant is quite at home surrounded by icy soundscapes, bouncing, round bass and latin percussion. It’s a treat to hear him develop as an artist through the years.”

Fingerman: “Nice chuggy numbers. Kulturhuset stands out for me. First rate :)”

Get Down Edits: “Proper, This is cosmic disco at its best, top quality!”

Daco “Great EP with lots of bounce!”

ROBOT 84 : “Nice summer vibes!”

Chris Massey Music: “Mastringskattan sounding cooler than a Calippo Cucumber here….full support and will give this a few trial runs”

Cosmic Capers Radio Show : “Mestringskattens cosmic swirls gets the vote for me on this one, nice tune.”

Pete Herbert : “Love ’em”

Bad Barbie : Lovely laid back summer meanderings”

Neil Diablo : “Sexy ep! amr is my favorite”

Paper Cuts # 3

EXCLUSIVES

papercuts #3

It’s been a while since the last Paper Cuts so we’ve got a stockpile of bonafide, road tested bombs that hit every every button labeled ‘rave’. From subterranean acid to disco bangers, it’s a collection that stretches two and half years at the coal face of house.

From Norway we have Ralph Myerz‘s epic fourteen minute ‘Acid 4 Eddie’, Tromsø legend Doc L Jnr’s wonky ‘Twilight’, Diskobeistet’s nu-disco ‘Birkelunden’ and ‘Gammal Morro’ plus young guns Rave-Enka and De Fantastiske To. Closer to home the Flash Atkins Gilles Peterson endorsed ‘Drug Empire’ and Andrew Weatherall favourite ‘Acid House Creator’ make an appearance, Daco brings his nu tech-soul and 2 Billion Beats do their thing. Kit Tacchini goes deep, Kimo shows his colours as one to watch, Weedyman drives it home and Chris Massey’s mix of Richard Seaborne still does damage.

We’ve also got exclusives from Neil Quigley and Mezman who take things deep and dance floor plus Leon Sweet’s Zed that walks the line between disco, techno, house and old school beautifully.

Overall it’s a damn fine snapshot of where the label has been and where it’s going with music that no discerning DJ should be without.

Paper Recordings….the story continues.

Flash Atkin – The Life and Remixes

2015 saw Flash Atkins release his debut album ‘The Life and Times’ and it’s mix of club smashers and disco nodders found people like FK, Andrew Weatherall, Horse Meat Disco, Ivan Smagghe, Rune Lindbaek and Bill Brewster getting hot under the collar.

Now comes the remix album with a collection of tracks some of which have only been out on vinyl and some not at all. It’s a roll call of who’s doing it right at the moment from the well known to the up and coming but all nail it. Names include The Revenge, The Emperor Machine, Sleazy McQueen, Pete Herbert, Tal M. Klein and Steve Cobby. Plus there’s a healthy representation from Norway in the form of Ralph Myerz, B.G.Baarregaard and Mental Overdrive. From the paper stable Leon Sweet, Doc L. Jnr step up and the elusive Jamie L turns out a 12 minute Detroit (by way of Halifax) monster.

So you’ve played the game, drunk the beer, danced to the tunes, read the fanzine, rolled your eyes at the middle aged man in tights and now you’ve got the remix album. Job done.

Craig Bratley – Great set of remixes, hard to pick a favourite.

Bill Brewster – Outstanding mixes from The Revenge and E Machine.

Sean Johnston (ALFOS) – Fantastic package – rinsed about four at ALFOS on Saturday.

Sleazy McQueen – Slimy, dirty package of low-brow house — just my type!

Aldrin Zouk – Couple of tasty remixes; I’m diggin’ from Doc L Junior, The Revenge, The Emperor Machine, Steve Cobby, Sleazy McQueen & Romano Arcaini Remix.

PAP200 Vinyl

A – Crazy P – Last Knockers
AA1 – Steve Cobby – Boule De Suif
AA2 – Flash Atkins – Rivers of Jordan (PAP200 Edit)

Oh boy, that came around quick! One day we’re faxing giant penises to magazines and the next we’ve got kids and are on our 200th single release. It’s been 22 years since we kicked things off with Salt City Orchestra’s The Book and In the intervening years we’ve hopefully carved out our little corner in the pantheon of house music. We’ve lived by our first “hidden” message on PAP001 “Look Forward Not Back” and have been keeping on keeping on with barely a glance over our shoulder but this is chance to buy ourselves a pint.

PAP200 will be three tracks from friends new and old on a limited edition 12” released on Record Store Day in numbered brown paper bags. Crazy P(enis) return to the fold for the first time since 2003 and it’s good to have them back. Last Knockers has got their trademark stripped back electronic funk with Danielle Moore adding the disco fizz. There’s plenty of wonk and roll as it builds over 10 glorious minutes.

When Steve Cobby was asked what Paper meant to him he said “Northern Musical heritage” and we’ll take that. He has been knocking it out the park over the last couple of years and this is his debut release for the label. Boule De Suif is a trip through funk and soul that is timeless but of it’s time. It’s what Herbie would sound like if he grew up in Hull.

Finally Flash Atkins goes down a more conventional route and it’s got his trademark layered sound. What starts as a straight forward deep house track evolves with trippy vocals and a chorus that brings the hairs up on the back of your neck. Mixmag liked it so much they gave it their Disco Single of the Month.

Northern Disco Lights Warm-Up Party

It’s a big one in Oslo weekend as we’re throwing a warm-up party for our Paper Vision film Northern Disco Lights with Ingensteds. It’ll showcase some of the country’s finest with Lindstrøm and Skatebård live plus Mungolian Jet Set‘s legendary DJ Strangefruit.
There’ll also be the exclusive first showing of our crowdfunding trailer.
Drink beer. Make rave.

Trash The Wax # 3

Our collection of the finest dance floor detonators returns for a third helping and on this hat trick appearance we welcome new friends to the fold alongside some of Paper’s tried & tested boogie constructors.

Volume 2 featured in sets from respected selectors such as Maurice Fulton, The Unabombers, Ray Mang, Pete Herbert, Chris Duckenfield, Fingerman & Leftside Wobble (amongst many) and blazed it’s way to the top of the Juno charts. Leon Sweet’s Sunny Bigler became undoubtedly THE track of the Summer and was heard at Electric Elephant, The Garden Festival, Festival Number 6, The Warehouse Project, BBC6 Music and was Mixmag’s ‘Tune Of The Month”.

Volume 3 keeps on keeping on with some fresh faces but seasoned producers none the less; Julian Sanza, Red Rack’em, Get Down Edits & Kohib all provide killer cuts alongside members of the Paper family such as Kooky & Damoon, Rave-enka, Beat Boy, Robot 84, Flash Atkins with Crazy P’s Danielle Moore plus Chris Massey who debuts the birth of a new collaboration project with Homoelectric’s Will Tramp.

New blood comes from Kohib, Gold Boy, Spiral, Skinny Dipp, DJ Steevo, Smashed Atoms & Spleen Underground who all make their presence well & truly known.

From chopped up disco & mutant boogie to peak time smashers & after party crashers, prepare for Trash The Wax 3 and hold tight!
