Ralph Myerz & The Kosmik Diamondz – Stay Kosmik EP

Long time Paper friend and top notch producer Ralph Myerz is back on with the opening salvo from his forthcoming album….and what a whopper! We mean literally as the first track alone clocks in at just under 15 minutes!

Ralph has been a cornerstone of the Norwegian dance scene since the early 90s when he broke globally with the Jack Herron band and “Think Twice”. Since then he has built up an eye watering body of work that ranges from jacking Chicago house and techno to nu-disco, deep house and hip hop. Last year he won the best electronic album Norwegian Grammy for Supersonic Pulse featuring George Clinton, Snoop Dog and Annie.

But here it’s strictly deep dance floor business.

Acid 4 Eddie is an epic 15 minute track built around a throbbing acid bass helped along by shuffling drums and stabby synths. The bass filters in and out as the dynamics of the track shift in a hypnotic journey, only breaking halfway through for some lighter chords before heading back in to the deep stuff and the acid peak. Then it’s a soft landing as the track winds down to enable one of those smooth running mixes.

Hello Space is a comparatively moderate 10 minutes and a synthy arpeggiated treat with a hint of Italo. Trippy vocal stabs and big atmospherics punctuate the bouncing bass which is reinforced with lead lines. Again the track breaks in the middle with some chords and an 80s synth line while the drums go breakbeat before its back to work.

Finally, Lett Sommarmat picks things up after the first two moody tracks. It uses an easy listening disco sample that is teased in before dropping to take things big room, then its smiles and hugs as the world becomes a better place!

2 Billion Beats – Noise In Your Eye / Full Moon Boogie

Here is the first EP in a double header to mark Paper’s 150th single release.

2 Billion Beats’ Tom and Col have been sat in their studio wearing Day-Glo and high tops waiting for the invention of the hoverboard to no avail. So to kill time they cranked up their collection of 80s synths, set to work and came up with a couple of tracks that could soundtrack Summer 2013.

Noise In Your Eye is a BIG floor disco track that plugs an LCD Soundsystem shaped hole. So much so that it was played by James Murphy at The Warehouse Project this Christmas. The mystery is, nobody knew how he got hold of it but a wayward licensing CD is thought to be the culprit!

Heavy 4/4 beats and a locked down bass start things off before the piano is intro-ed, followed by strings and the sample weaving it’s way in and out. With synth noodlings, the track keeps building before it breaks for the chord change and all sorts of mayhem breaks out.

Full Moon Boogie is on a similar tip of 80s inspired disco and it’s all about the piano at the end. A stuttering synth bass and nagging top line build tension until 2/3rds through when it drops to a piano that’s been nicked from the middle of The Hacienda’s dancefloor at 1.30am on a Saturday night in 1993.

Ralph Myerz – REALLY digging Noise In Your Eye. I’m a huge fan of 2 Billion Beats but really feel that they have taken their stuff to the next level with this release. Full support from me for a looooong time!

Cowbell Radio – Two of the best tunes of 2013, no doubt, both have been massive on Cowbell. Noise in your Eye just gets the nod, but Full Moon Boogie is a proper ‘break glass in case of emergency’ dance-floor filler! Amazing work fellas!

Severino Panzetta (Horsemeat Disco) – Pretty cool.

Leon Sweet – Beats Slave Auto / GTTR

1. Beat Slave Auto
2. GTTR

Leon Sweet is a producer who paid his dues and has the scars to prove it! He cut his teeth in the madness the free party circuit in the 90s, has been stuck in the middle of a gangster / bouncer showdown in the booth of the MOS whilst DJing and experienced major label meltdown.

And now after a break he’s back with two dance floor bombs for Paper on this debut two track EP for the label.

Beat Slave Auto first came to our attention via the great Billy Scurry who heard it on Soundcloud and pointed it in our direction. It’s a super heavy, hypnotic, pitched down slomo acid track that weighs in at over 10 minutes. Straddling techno, cosmic, house, acid and disco, it twists and turns in to what is proper head music.

On the flip, GTTR lightens things up with a rough as you like disco sample and the vocals of Christabel Cossins. Vox stabs, nagging bass and congas build to a classic piano riff that does what it says on the tin; smiles all round!

Neil Diablo, one of Manchester’s unsung heroes steps out from behind the decks to release an EP of future music that ranges from peak time deep house to slo-mo disco.

Neil Diablo – Let’s Get It On EP

1. Let’s Get It On.
2. Yr Mnd Yr (Dub)
3. Take Two

Neil Diablo has been a cornerstone of the Northwest’s club scene over the past ten years through his El Diablo’s Social Club, which has been a bastion for all things disco and house. Booking guests like Greg Wilson and Eric Duncan, it is well known that Neil is the DJ that the crowds go to hear. Out of the night has sprung EDSC Recordings and his vinyl only disco edits as Evil K’Neil on KAT Records that are highly sought after, selling out in days.

Let’s Get It On is deep tribal business headed straight to the main room. It’s teeth are shown once the organ synth comes in for proper heads down foot to the floor deep house that bites. The latter half of the track gives the 303 a run out and it’s all boxes ticked!

Yr Mnd Yr first saw the light of day on the Paper Cuts # 1 compilation earlier in the year, finding favour with DJs like Justin Robertson, Andy Ash and Love From Outer Space’s Sean Johnston. Here he strips things back for a dub that is tough house music, drawing equal inspiration from Detroit, NYC and Chicago.

Finally he flexes his disco muscles on Take Two. Taking things right down, it’s a rolling funk groove with an off-kilter bass, delayed synths, dub stabs and a sample that does it’s thing in slo-mo style. Music for the head and feet.

Farley Silvester – Jam Down Beat Down

Acid House survivors Terry Farley and Stretch Silvester for their first release on the label “Jam Down Beat Down”.

Terry has helped define modern UK dance music. In the 80s through his involvement with Boys Own and bands like the Happy Mondays. In the 90s pioneering a tougher garage sound on JBO with Pete Heller. And in the 00s with Faith, a shining beacon for proper house music.
Stretch Silvester has remixed acts like Pulp & St. Etienne, featured on Coca Cola ad campaigns, composed the music for Bjorn Borg’s London fashion show and continues to run his Bring Back The Future record label.

Together they are Farley Silvester!

Jam Down Beat Down has got the trademark Farley sound of floor heavy main room beats, rolling bass, congas and garage stabs. It’s built around a reggae sample that gives the track an otherworldly feel as it floats in and out with dubbed out effects. There’s a build to the drop before things really take off in the second half!

“Paper is a great fit for us because they understand the draw of the blue lights coming off Ms Vasquez glitter ball as the queens stamp and the ball kids runway. They understand the ultimate HOUSE end game which we have both always aimed for …one day…one day.” – Terry Farley

FLASH ATKINS – THE IN CROWD / FLASH’S THEME

Proviant Audio – Hey Lets Do It! by Paper Recordings

Flash Atkins – Flash’s Theme by Flash Atkins

We Are Woodville and Paper Recordings’ very own loser super hero Flash Atkins returns to centre stage with another genre-busting EP on We Are Woodville and two brand new cuts that delve deep into the realms of nu disco.

The In Crowd is a chunky and chugging groove laden number based round a hefty Roxy Music sample. It’s got some heavy synths, a big break and is a perfect peaktime roof raiser!

Flash’s Theme is a laid back and jazz infused disco affair. Ronny Jordan inspired guitar lines jam over a warm bed of live drums, full bass and keys to deliver a simply infectious and timeless record.

BUY IT IN OUR SHOP and at all the download stores.
