Diskobeistet – Birkelunden Remixes

Diskobeistet’s Birkelunden EP touched on the classic paper sound with added Norwegian vocals and was a hot one for us last year. So hot in fact that now we’ve stuck it through the remix machine just in time for summer.

Vinny Villbass takes it across the ocean and gives it a stripped back NYC spin. The result is a no messing, late night jacked up workout with added hypnotising synth shots and rolling drums & percussion but still retaining the original hooky chords.

Richard Seaborne never fails and this time he channels the spirit of Todd Terry by way of Leeds. Machine gun snares, filtered bass and keys aim straight between the eyes and score a bullseye for dance floor dynamite.

Haugli takes the groove deep but his mix ramps up deceptively with a three note synth rolling bassline that steams along like a lost take on a Johnny Cash session. Chords & pads from the original swirl in & out to up the cosmic ante for a very playable slice of modern dance music.

Boxing things off is new track Dypet that rolls a phatty and thumbs a lift to the after party. Lazy, hazy almost broken beats with some serious enticing synth sounds and basslines make this a definite addition to any discerning post club mixtape.

Paper’s association with Norway runs deep; from first signings Those Norwegians it has continued to flourish through to today with the label’s Paper Vision making a documentary called “Northern Disco Lights : The Rise & Rise of Norwegian Dance Music” due out in 2016.

So we thought it was time we pulled together some of the catalogue for a compilation.

“Skrangle” means leftfield or wonky and is a sound that the Norwegians have invented and claimed as their own. Rune Lindbaek fits the bill perfectly and his Junta Jaega is psychedelic disco at it’s best. He was also part responsible for Those Norwegians whose Da King Da Mazda was an anthem in Oslo’s seminal Skansen club and sounds as freshly unhinged now as it did back in the day.

Ralph Myerz has been a cornerstone of the scene since the early Tellé Records days and his Acid 4 Eddie is 14 minutes of deep bubbling house that had types like Osunlade, Laurent Garnier, Soul Clap and The Emperor Machine giving it the big one.

The sound has been passed on to a younger generation to producers like The Treatment, Diskobeistet, Rave-enka and Proviant Audio who’s out the box pop shouldn’t work but does in spades. Latest in line has been De Fantasiske To whose take on classic US garage comes with an arctic twist and they are looking like they have the legs to go all the way.

Add in a classic from from Keyboy, a remix from electronic pioneer Prins Thomas and exclusives from Nordic legend Kahuun, Rave-enka and Proviant Audio and you get a compilation that showcases the best of the country’s world influencing, genre-busting dance music.

Sunday Paper Vol.2

The second volume of Sunday Paper explores some of the more laid-back and forgotten corners of the back catalogue that may have been missed in the rush for the dancefloor.

There’s the soundtrack sounds of Streetlife Originals, Truant taking a balearic route through South Manchester, Daco’s deep easy listening and Flash Atkins mixing up an epic chilled out odyssey. There are gems from the early days like the Problem Kids collaboration with Ashley Beedle, one of Crazy Penis’ finest moments on Give It Up, the leftfield classic Wayback by Hubtone and Shaboom’s mesmerising Bessie’s Reprise that has been remastered and edited for this compilation. New schoolers Joe Morris, La Guardia De La Luz and Proviant Audio add some soul with Kahuun and The Bionics getting seriously horizontal.

Rave-enka – Påfuglen EP

After providing hefty remix action for Richard Seaborne and behind the massive Gimme Some Dim Sum as one half of De Fantastiske To, Ravi Brunsvik steps up to drop his debut solo EP of the Norwegian good stuff on Paper.

Antibac kicks things off and to quote Chris in the office “it builds like an absolute bastard!”. Nearly 10 minutes of solid thunder is accompanied by jacking percussion and icy synth stabs whilst the beat just keeps on trucking. This one will grab you before you realise what’s happened.

Sur Sennep takes things to a late night discotheque located somewhere between The Hacienda and a Croatian festival. An almost acid house set up leads the way before evolving into the kind of balearic disco that can only be dreamed up in Norway. There are plenty of hooky synths, old skool keys and a bassline that squelches. Good times ahead when you unleash this..

Closing the EP off Påfuglen picks up the baton and takes things to the chill out room. Minimalistic and stripped back yet still full of enough synth squeaks, tweaks & bleeps to keep you hooked and intrigued. If Kraftwerk opened an opium den then this would surely be on their in-house playlist.

Sean Johnston – Chris Massey sent me this ages ago – I didn’t label it properly and I have been dying to know what it was – mystery solved. It’s fucking brilliant and has been a staple of 2015 ALFOS parties. KILLER!

Weedyman – Kanaga’s Revenge

Weedyman steps up for his debut Paper EP entitled “Kanaga’s Revenge” and it’s a bobby blinder. There are three original cuts of warped out sub-tropical house music that will find their place with the 7am in a Berlin basement kind of jocks and forward thinking clubs everywhere.

BMBJ gets the rave ball rolling with a big riff from the off and never letting up until the end. The track has a hypnotic, druggy vibe with burbling acid working the groove and it’s basement bugging all the way.

Ondo Ondo Anda nods a wink to Detroit and is a 9 minute opus to really get lost in. Warped out saxophone and cosmic stabs surf across the 4/4 and it’s a lockdown as the track ebbs and flows for maximum head mashing.

Feel It brings things back down to earth with a more sleazy ‘n smooth approach perfect for setting the tone early doors. Lush pads, catchy stabs, a familiar sample and just a hint of a 303 brings up the rear for quality, timeless deep house.

There’s an ice cool remix from Mr Sunny Bigler himself, Leon Sweet who notches it up ever so slightly to take things more late night and soulful whilst still retaining the vibe of the original.

De Fantastiske To – Monokrom EP

Norwegian young guns De Fantastiske To have come up with three brand new basement blasters for their new Monokrom EP.

It kicks off with the title track that is a straight up deep tech houser packing a vocal punch. Snapping percussion, detuned synth stabs, acid squelch and a large bassline are all present and correct as the sultry vocal stylings of their fellow countryman OST make it a certified killer!

Litt Dristig keeps things murky and a little hypnotic with swirly pads & organ chords then some stubby synth shots that ensure this party is kept subterranean. Proper deep house and not a vest in sight!

Sensommer goes jacking whilst keeping an eye firmly on the dance floor. Beats & bass start the party off and keep everything in check until some almost balearic disco pads & synths bring an element of sunrise to the forefront while the arps go twinkly.

Paper’s resident rodent and all round rotter Flash Atkins manages to stay off the juice long enough to turn in a full on, heads down tech edged banger that should be only played in the darkest of Berlin dark rooms.

Neil Diablo – Monokrom is pretty heavy!

Billy Scurry – Great release, looking forward to hearing Sensommer on a beach in the near future, but the Flash rmx steals it for me.

Danielle Moore (Crazy P) – Nice grooves on here with some quality skippy rhythms!
