We Are Woodville and Paper Recordings’ very own loser super hero Flash Atkins returns to centre stage with another genre-busting EP on We Are Woodville and two brand new cuts that delve deep into the realms of nu disco.

The In Crowd is a chunky and chugging groove laden number based round a hefty Roxy Music sample. It’s got some heavy synths, a big break and is a perfect peaktime roof raiser!

Flash’s Theme is a laid back and jazz infused disco affair. Ronny Jordan inspired guitar lines jam over a warm bed of live drums, full bass and keys to deliver a simply infectious and timeless record.

Daco – Drip Dry

Paper Recordings are back with Manchester soul warrior Daco for the latest single release including a great remix from the ever consistent Yam Who?

Dave Connally AKA Daco has been releasing quality dance music for the last 20 years on labels like WEA as part of Mellowstate in the early nineties, producing for numerous labels such as Sony Music and working alongside the likes of Zed Bias, The Una Bombers and Finley Quaye. His ‘Aquarium EP’ on Paper in 2009 received broad critical acclaim and support and is now followed up with ‘Drip Dry’.

The A side features the original version of ‘Drip Dry’, a funk laden slice of slo-mo house boogie with warm analogue bass, soulful keys and looped vocal lines leading to an uplifting classic piano line that conjures up the spirit of late eighties house.

The flipside sees Yam Who? take the remix reins and deliver a bumping nu-disco house cut that ups the tempo and brings the moog work to the fore and a distinctly Moroder-esue feel to the proceedings.

Crazy Penis – A Nice Hot Edit With – Textura Review

It’s pretty hard to take seriously a recording credited to Crazy Penis but, in fact, the group’s A Nice Hot Edit With … is seriously good. The band’s A Nice Hot Bath With … appeared in 1999, so it’s no great surprise to hear the 2010 re-work sound so deliciously old-school; in short, if you’re a fan of Yore’s deep, neo-classic sound and the idea of a vocal-less Chic likewise strikes your fancy, you’ll likely cotton to A Nice Hot Edit With just as much.

PAPERecordings is back from it’s summer hols with a release that breaks the template from dapper gent and Balearic legend Justin Robertson. Justin is one of acid house’s true pioneers, constantly evolving and pushing new sounds using his vast armoury of music that ranges from reggae to synth pop to techno to house and rock.

We Could Be is his second outing on the relaunched PAPERecordings and it’s a belter. The original is warped 4/4 business with a nagging slap bass riding the sub. There is all sorts of analogue synth action and choppy edits to give it unexpected drops and fills resulting in big floor energy.

Next up Justin’s own remix takes live drums and creates something akin to oldskool techno played by a band. The detroit bass dominates with a killer groove and plenty of fills to keep it rolling.

Boozer, drugger and sound manipulator Flash Atkins takes his remix down the electro pop route with floating keys, synth washes and plenty of delays. The middle section goes in to a heads down percussion session before breaking into an arpeggiatored ending for the big finish…..mahem ensues!

Ashley Casselle and Mark O’Brian have taken the parts of the original down a deep techno route that keeps it tight. They work the groove for maximum impact but with plenty going on under the hood.

Finally there is the bonus Magikal 100 that wears Justin’s 80s influences well and truly on it’s sleeve. With a dropped down BPM it sounds like woozy Japan at a comedown party after a particularly heavy night…and that’s got to be a good thing!
