Daco – Castillo EP

The man known to his Mum as Dave is back with another space themed EP and yet again it’s four tracks of immaculately produced tech-soul bombs. We are particularly chuffed to have Basil Clarke from legendary Manchester band Yargo delivering vocals on A Little More Volume which is a thumping guitar driven wallop of a tune that hits all the rave buttons without getting boxed in by any of them.

The live mix makes some subtle changes with drums that have a bit more groove, added synths and tweaked production but the result is the same : dancefloor devastation.

Skirting is tech-houser that wears a big acid house grin. Anchored round an acid B-line it burbles and squeaks it’s way over drums and congas that swing like Baloo going toe to toe with King Louie plus added tropicala. It will bring the sunshine to the dingiest clubs and the darkest of basements to outdoor festivals.

Finally Daco does his psychedelic prog disco thing on Saving Grace. Loose broken drums, octave jumping arps and some seriously deranged programming make this a trip to dealt with carefully but the rewards will be cosmic!

Mighty Mouse: “Love this EP, superb!”

Julian Sanza: “Saving Grace its the kind of tunes i love to play, sparse, electronic, funky/techno and rave vibes”

Vinny Villbass: “Nice nice nice!”

Sean Johnston: “Bonkers!”

Alkalino: “Raw, dirty… I like A Little More Volume Original +Live Mix are awesome! Saving Grace is also nice. thks!”

Gemini Brothers: “This is just an amazing EP! Outstanding sounds for any summer sets! Full support!”

Cosmic Capers Radio Show: “Saving Grace is quality, a trip for sure. A Little More Volume Original mix is a great piece of music, i’m really into it!”

Flash Atkin – The Life and Remixes

2015 saw Flash Atkins release his debut album ‘The Life and Times’ and it’s mix of club smashers and disco nodders found people like FK, Andrew Weatherall, Horse Meat Disco, Ivan Smagghe, Rune Lindbaek and Bill Brewster getting hot under the collar.

Now comes the remix album with a collection of tracks some of which have only been out on vinyl and some not at all. It’s a roll call of who’s doing it right at the moment from the well known to the up and coming but all nail it. Names include The Revenge, The Emperor Machine, Sleazy McQueen, Pete Herbert, Tal M. Klein and Steve Cobby. Plus there’s a healthy representation from Norway in the form of Ralph Myerz, B.G.Baarregaard and Mental Overdrive. From the paper stable Leon Sweet, Doc L. Jnr step up and the elusive Jamie L turns out a 12 minute Detroit (by way of Halifax) monster.

So you’ve played the game, drunk the beer, danced to the tunes, read the fanzine, rolled your eyes at the middle aged man in tights and now you’ve got the remix album. Job done.

Craig Bratley – Great set of remixes, hard to pick a favourite.

Bill Brewster – Outstanding mixes from The Revenge and E Machine.

Sean Johnston (ALFOS) – Fantastic package – rinsed about four at ALFOS on Saturday.

Daco – Vostok EP

1. Meine Killer feat. Die Hexen (Original Mix)
2. Meine Killer feat. Die Hexen (Live Mix)
3. Struck Out
4. Dreadnought

MIXMAG DISCO SINGLE OF THE MONTH

The mighty Daco is back on Paper after a move to Spain and time spent sailing the high seas. He sent us a whole load of fresh music so we’ve taken the best and will be releasing it over a series of three EPs before collating them on an album later in the year.

Meine Killer launches things and it’s a quality deep house track that is soulful and catchy with enough wallop to rock any floor. Die Hexen’s vocal has a touch of Propaganda’s Claudia Brücken to give it a 80s Eastern European flavour. There is slinky bass, live drums and a chorused guitar that nags all the way through for some main room clout.

The live mix keeps all the same qualities of the original but takes the alley named “Boogie”. Live congas, percussion, disco guitar and the bass is given a bit more head to do it’s thing. It’s strictly analogue business here and if you want it live, it’s all here baby.

Struck Out goes all the way down the disco route and it’s the sound of a tight-as-you-like house band on their night off having some fun when nobody’s watching. 70s synths, agogo a plenty and a heavy funk vibe makes this music for dance floors that flash.

Finally Dreadnought saves the heaviest till last and it’s future proto-balearic prog business. Arps chug away with a motorkik beat before breaking to a chord progression that is set to “build” and is the tone for the rest of the track. It’s got ALFOS and Prins Thomas written all over it and comes off like a lost Baldelli classic that would have shaken Cosmic to it’s foundations. Expect beard strokers to break their life long dance ban and ravers to lose their shit.

Hot Toddy (Crazy P) – Pretty impressive stuff, great musicality running through this EP.

Red Rack ’em – Digging Struck Out. Dope. Dreadnought is tasty too…

Sean Johnston – (ALFOS / Hardway Bros) – On a roll boys!

Neil Quigley – Fantastic EP! Dreadnought is a monster, and I’m the newest member of Die Hexen’s fan club. Awesome!

Mighty Mouse – Love Struck Out is really nice.

Gemini Brothers – This EP is absolutely AMAZING! Love all of them!

Pete Herbert – Fantastic!!

Julian Sanza – Lovely vibes! Diggin!

Severino Panzetta (Horse Meat Disco) – YES GROOVY!!

DJ Rocca – I like Struck out and Dreadnought. Very good tracks

Chris Massey – Bigger than Flash Atkins’ skid marks.

Nuno Cacho – This is mind blowing. Love it!

Andy (Inland Knights) – Struck Out is awesome….def in the box.

Ed Mahon – The EP gets better with each tune! Loving ‘Struck Out’ and already stocking it up for the Summer sets. Dreadnought is quality and will be a Cowbell favourite from the off!

Aldrin Zouk – Dreadnought & Meine Killer right up my alley! Thanks!

Bad Barbie Beats – Struck Out Floats my boat.

Get Down Edits – Excellent Stuff from Paper once again, Meine Killer (Original Mix) jumps right out, looking forward to testing all these x

Kimo – Kindara EP

The global sound of house music is alive and well and here’s the proof with our first signing from Indonesia. Double Deer’s Kimo brings four tracks of crisp deepness and vibe heavy disco that absolutely smashes it.

First up Born Out is a bonafide disco thumper that builds around live drums, a nagging disco bass and acid line before the tension is released to an incessant piano riff and swooping strings. Then it’s mayhem as the chord changes and arps add to the mix as it drives to the peak. This has been road tested by the Paper DJs over the past few months and never fails to take the roof off.

Bow Down is a change of pace and features Kal with a super hooky vocal. It’s a fusion of the Far East and balearica with Kimo’s trademark arps and dance floor dynamics. There are guitars and synth lines a plenty plus Rhodes and live drums that steadily suck you in to a hazy world of space disco.

Whirl takes a more hypnotic route that is nailed down by a cowbell and analogue bass. Gamelan steel drums give it that evocative Eastern flavour as it hypnotises you in to a delayed break when things get serious. The riff keeps on with leads, pads and synths for a track that is fresh, dancefloor heavy and dripping in atmosphere.

Finally First Kick is a more straight forward house track with a riffing organ that develops in to pushing synth and walking bass for middle of the night head down tackle.

Justin Robertson – Fabulous EP… all cracking.

Bill Brewster – Like Born Out, will definitely use that.

Sean Johnston (ALFOS / Hardway Bros) – Nicemoments on this ep

Billy Scurry – Aceness!! Think Bow down might be a bit of a slow grower and stay in the playlist for a bit.

Julian Sanza – Loving the vocal track.

Neil Quigley – Born Out and Whirl are right up my street, thanks again Paper HQ.

Fingerman – Awesome release!

Aldrin Zouk – Nice EP. Diggin’ Born Out, Bow Down & Whirl.

DJ Rocca – Full support

Sam Divine (Defected) – Nice release! Like Whirl! thanks.

Rev Milo – Cracking chuggers! gREAT TO HAVE TUNES THAT HAVE A DYNAMIC AND TAKE YOU SOMEWHERE- SORRY for shouting!

Bad Barbiebeats – Chuggy, deep and lovely

Neil Diablo – Love this! the whole ep is great but Bow Down is the winner

80s Child – Right up my street!

Murray Richardson – Smashing release from Kimo, especially finding the Born Out & Whirl tracks especially smashing

Robot 84 – All the tracks are winners, great release.

Leon Sweet – Born Out is an absolute stonker. Super strong debut on Paper, top work all round.

Rave-enka – Bow Down is so very, very nice!

Nuno Cacho – This is SO PAPER… Love it. I will open my Boiller room with this.

George Summers (Midnight Riot) – Yes…all good.

Ed Mahon (Cowbell Radio) – Holy Fucknuts Batman…Born Out is a bona fide monster!!!

Wrighty (Soul Buggin’) – hooked from the off of Born Out, great groove. Loving the after party feel of Bow Down too.

Ricard Seaborne – Let’s Get Serious

Leeds’ finest is back on Paper with an EP showing off his chops as a producer on his uppers backed up by two remixes that have gone for the jugular and got a clean bite.

The original is an 80s influenced deep houser that will sound equally at home on a beach at sunset in the adriatic, bass quaking a festival rig or on a European motorway at 3am. With synth washes and a filtered riff it hypnotises it’s way to a state of balearic dancefloor heaven.

Renata takes it’s pointers from the mid-90s with a pad bringing to mind a time when acid house was getting it’s feet under the table. Add a big synth lead, stabby bass, strings and the spirit of the Beloved and Sub Sub is summoned up for the 00s.

In a game of two halves (Brian) Flash Atkins’ mix is all about the build. The deep and techy first section rides the one note bass and filtered synth with added Moog. It’s a steady reach for the break when things get kicked loose as the track is taken down to it’s raw elements. The bass changes and things are built back up synth by synth. Once it reaches it’s peak, take cover or you’re liable to get injured in the maelstrom.

Mark Farina:
” Yes..like em!”

Justin Harris:
“Nice EP – well done mate :)”

2 Billion Beats:
“Renata for me, reminds me of early Leftfield, awesome!”

Danny Oliver (High Soul Society):
“Love Flash Atkins Mix….perfect for my sets. Support”

Richard Seaborne – Girl Music EP

PAPDLS152

Richard Seaborne – Girl Music EP

1. Date Night
2. I Know You Love Me
3. Belle Choses

Richard Seaborne is back with a three track EP that oozes deep disco and demonstrating why he is a producer to watch. Always armed with an unexpected vocal and crisp production, big things are round the corner.

Richard first appeared on Paper with The Reasons Why. It was deadpan take-down of a former lover that rocked the floors of Aeroplane, Horsemeat Disco, Doc Martin, Roberto Rodriguez, Eric Duncan and Tensnake to name just a few.

Date Night kicks things off and is a hypnotic deep house nagger with a recurring delayed synth stab that filters in and out. Set over Richard’s swinging drums it works the groove with a crushed vocal to add melody and intrigue. Suitable for beard strokers and disco queens alike.

I Know You Love Me has gorgeous reverbed percussion over disco beats and a feel good sample. Add an easy listening vocal that sounds like it’s never belonged anywhere else and you’ve got a timeless track that is deceptively deadly!

To round things off Belle Choses finds it’s groove in a locked down disco sample and drives that bad boy all the way home! With live broken house beats it draws you in with it’s repetitiveness, off set by filtering, disco toms, camp vocal, samples and efx firing off for detonation!

Justin Harris feat. Laura Vane – “Breathe 1,2,3” – Out Now!

PAPDLS151
Justin Harris feat. Laura Vane – 1,2 3 Breathe
1. Original
2. House Mix
3. House Dub
4. Down Tempo Mix

Justin Harris, an acid house warrior since 1987 finally arrives on Paper with his debut release 1,2,3 Breathe. His CV boasts gigs at clubs like Panorama Bar, Fabric, The End, Back To Basics and Robert Johnson and remixes for The Human League, Tiefshwartz and Mathew Herbert on labels like Classic, SWAG, Crosstown Rebels and 20 20 Vision. Amongst his many collaborations, Freaks with Luke Solomon is best know for their leftfield take on house and groundbreaking label MFF.

Breathe 1,2,3 is deep house with a soul that has a stamp of quality running through it like a stick of Blackpool rock. Minimal drums, analogue bass, piano and synth strings set things up for Laura Vane’s heart felt and timeless vocals.

The house mix ups drive and tempo but retains the deepness. Along with additional classic house stabs, the piano and strings give the track some nice chord progressions as the vocals tell their story.

The dub strips things back even more with the vocal stabbing and out as the music unfolds.

Finally, the down tempo mix breaks things right down for a lush version that aims at the hairs on your back of you neck and hits.

Sean Johnston (A Love From Outer Space) – Very good indeed!

Sleazy McQueen -I ‘m feeling the midtempo vibes, for sure!

When Paper Recordings met Sean Johnston

Hear the full interview on Paper Radio.

PR – How did ALFOS come about?

SJ – Jeff Barret from Heavenly Records introduced Andrew & me during the acid house days. I’d done some records for Sabres Of Paradise in the 90s then we drifted in & out of each other’s paths.
One day Andrew rang me to say his driver had let him down and could I give him a lift to Brighton. In the car he asked what I had to listen to and all I had was a mix CD I‘d done for my own amusement which I put on and he said, “this is really good, we should do something”.
He then did the Watch The Ride compilation and asked me to play at the launch which went well. Our mutual friend Nathan Gregory Wilkins from History Clock started booking for The Drop in Stoke Newington and he asked if we wanted to do something.

PR – Did it start with a definite concept?

SJ – The idea was that we would try to drop something slower and keep it under 122bpm. We honestly didn’t know if it would be just us and 10 mates in the bottom of this pub or whether it would catch on so it’s been a massive surprise to us both how it’s taken off.

PR – How do you play together?

SJ – At first I played really slow stuff for the first two hours then he played the last two. But when we played Electric Elephant he sprung it on me and said we’d go back to back which was a little nerve racking!
We tried 1 on 1 off then 3 on 3 off before settling on 5 each but there’s an unwritten rule that if one of us has a good idea then you can cut in.

PR – What do you play off?

SJ – Andrew plays CDs mostly. He still buys vinyl then spends hours transferring to CDs, which is quite a quaint concept!
I play off Traktor. I learnt on 1210s and have played both CD & vinyl but Traktor works best for me. I’ve used various controllers but am currently using a Native Instruments one.

PR – Almost weekly on Facebook there’s arguments from people about vinyl versus digital…..

SJ – Speaking personally I started buying records when I was 17 and probably owned in excess of 20k records so I don’t personally feel that I owe vinyl anything. But I’m making records and trying to work with labels that put out vinyl so I feel I’m doing my bit. At the end of the day, it’s music. I respect people’s points of view but for me it has to be about the music whether from vinyl, CD, digital tape or whatever…it has to make people move in a party!

PR – The artwork for ALFOS has a strong look, how did that come about?

SJ – Andrew had found a book in a second hand shop that had the illustration we used and in regards to the type, we wanted something that was very inter- war Germany. I spoke to our friend Logan Fisher who is a really good graphic designer about what we wanted and he got it exactly. Without giving too much away the rest is based on a Fritz Lang movie poster but we’d better not get too much into that!

PR – Has the night changed much from when it started?

SJ – The first year probably had 50/50 of old & new music. There wasn’t enough of the slow stuff to play 5 – 8 hours worth but over the course of the last 3 years there’s been a lot more of it made. We do play a lot of edits and stuff that sounds like it’s old but it’s actually new. Both of us dig like there’s no tomorrow and the sound sort of developed. The biggest influences are early proto house music & electronic disco and Andrew said it’s basically the result of 25 years record buying!
People still ask us what we play and we still don’t have a name for it. The ALFOS Facebook group has posts from members saying a track is an ALFOS tune because it’s slow but it needs more to it than being slow. It has to have that feeling, I know what that is and so does Andrew.

PR – What about the future?

SJ – As long as we’re having fun doing it and people are enjoying it we’ll continue. I can’t speak for Andrew but I think he enjoys a bit of company at the weekend!

PR – Have you done any productions together?

SJ – I did a remix for one of the Asphodells tracks and also for one of Craig Bratley’s tracks which will come out on a Bird Scarer compilation. A few people have approached us about an ALFOS remix but he’s very busy and so am I….but never say never.

PR – What’s going on with the Hardway Bros?

SJ – I just had a single out on Throne Of Blood which had a staggering response. I got the DJ reactions and I was taken aback, everyone from Richie Hawtin to Harvey has been playing it. I went on a remixing rampage last year which all seem to be coming out now; something for Max Essa, Headman,
Scott Fraser & Douglas McCarthy all should be out in a few of weeks and also something for Ewan Pearson & Sasse who are restarting Miserichord.

PR – What’s Electric Elephant like?

SJ – I can honestly say they have been the best times of my adult life! To be in Croatia with like-minded people and a friendly crowd in an idyllic place is amazing and it’s great to hang out with your peers in a relaxed environment and have a laugh. I can’t recommend it enough.

PR – Anyone you are looking forward to seeing this year?

SJ – Optimo are always a pleasure to see. Ewan Pearson of course who I really rate as being technically superb plus he plays stuff that I always wish I had! Last year one of the revelations for me was Krysko who I wasn’t familiar with but he’s a top chap and a very good DJ. The people of the Warehouse Project in Manchester are very spoilt having him as resident.

Paper Radio 7 – Summer ’13 – Electric Elephant Special

The new Paper Radio is an Electric Elephant Special with interviews from A Love From Outer Space’s Sean Johnston and the festival’s very own Chris Massey who picks three classic EE tunes.

We are also hitting our 150th single release so have a mix of the deep stuff from label favourite, Viking disconaut Rune Linadbaek to mark the occasion.

There’s the chance to win one of five Papercuts # 1 CDs, music new and old plus idle chit chat from Flash Atkins alter-ego Ben Davis and 2 Billion Beats’ Tom Lonsborough.

2 Billion Beats – Revolutions / Warm Feeling EP

It’s been a long time coming but 2 Billion Beats’ debut album is ready to pop and here’s the second EP to be taken from it.

Revolutions struts its way onto the dance floor for a track that is deep, solid and aimed squarely between the eyes. It features some heavy cosmic squelches & squeaks before an arp hits to shift things up a gear to the setting marked ‘heavy”. This will take you to the stars & back whilst stopping off in the basements for a top up.

Warm Feeling is a melting pot of jacking-disco-jazz tinged house music with the silky vocals of Dieter that perfectly partners up with the soaring pads, busty Rhodes & firecracker percussion. It delivers a surefire selection for all the party jocks.

Norway’s Magnus International steps in fresh from one of the albums of the year on Prins Thomas’ Full Pupp . He takes Revolutions and straddles techno and house for a mix that is pure peak time heads down tackle for tougher floors.

Finally Italy’s DJ Steevo goes full on dance floor nu-disco shaker for his mix of Warm Feeling. He takes the B-line in to an NRG direction, thumps the drums and lets the Rhodes do it’s work whilst using synths and delayed vocals to give the track dynamics.

Justin Robertson: “Top stuff on the Magnus remix”

Mugwump: “Loving the original of Revolutions”

Sean Johnston/Hardway Bros: “DJ Steevo doing the biz!”

Discodromo: “Great! love the Magnus International remix”

Alkalino: “Revolutions original and Magnus International Remix are the ones for me, thks!”

DJ Rocca: “Really like it, especially the Magnus International remix”

Fingerman: “Great stuff! Loving the remixes too! Roll on the LP :)”

Reza Attar: “Love the DJ Steevo mix!”

DJ Paulette: “Revolutions – Hot Since 82 must surely be peeing his pants over this one! Warm Feeling is a curve ball – wonky synth disco.
Revolutions – is a loopfest for dark corners and the DJ Steevo remix is a slo-mo disco banger!”

Duncan Gray: “Wow, loving that Magnus remix of Revolutions. nice one. thanks!”

Ed Mahon (Cowbbell Radio) : “Revolutions is a sure fire winner, big hit on dancefloors! Loving the DJ Steevo remix of Warm Feeling too, excellent stuff! Welcome back”
