Flash Goes North

Here’s what happens when the blaggard and drunkard pops out for a pack of fags in Manchester.
England’s loss is Norway’s gain!

Flash Atkins Hero Game

Flash Atkins follows up the acclaimed “The Life and Times” album with a load of stuff including fanzine and limited edition ale. But in a world first he is launching a free 8 bit retro smartphone game on 24 June. It has eleven levels with each one playing the corresponding album track as the gameplay sees Flash fight off ghosts, monsters, various obstacles and everything else that is thrown at our struggling supersonic hero. With lo-fi graphics, highly addictive playability and a super-hot soundtrack, the boundaries of music and games continue to be pushed.

FLASH ATKINS – CAMPERVAN EP

PAPD22 – Flash Atkins – Campervan EP by Paper Recordings

Flash Atkins – Campervan EP

1 Test One
2 Cherry Bounce
3 Test One (Flash Dub)
4 Cherry Bounce (Flash Dub)

Flash Atkins is a former Super Hero who lives in a Campervan in a field in deepest Yorkshire, maintaining an unhealthy addiction to drugs and booze.

Flash is actually the alter ego of Paper / The Bionics’ Ben Davis and he was created as a reaction against perma-tanned-indoors-sunglass-wearing-wanna-be-superstar DJs.

The Campervan EP is four tracks of floor rocking house music. First up, Test One has taken the original bleep classic as a starting point and given it a disco makeover. Starting off deep and percussive, it breaks to live bass and horns with plenty of analogue synths providing the electronics. Once the acid house piano comes in at the end, it’s dancefloor game over!

Cherry Bounce uses a cheeky sample to hold down a straight up take of garage house. With a bass line that nods to Farley & Heller and funked out Rhodes, it builds to a synth heavy drop before heading back in to the grooved keys.

The Test One dub strips things back to a simple nagging synth line for a big room take that has got Tribal Records running through it’s DNA. Big reverbs and heavy bass means this is simple and very effective.

Finally, the Cherry Bounce Dub goes tracky and hypnotic, riding out the original’s elements with the Rhodes getting filtered to change things up.

More quality from Flash Atkins, the man with no plan.

DJ REACTIONS

Rocky (X Press 2) – Cherry Bounce both versions doing it for me.

Jazzanova – Music should make people laugh too. Here is a perfect example.

Beats & Beyond – Still have the original Test One on 12″, was my fave bleep track back then…cool reworks. Quality EP

Diskjokke – Nice and with an unexpected twist.

Sleazy McQueen – This is really cool. I’ll certainly play test one and I’m sure Cherry Bounce will fit in my sets as well.

This Is Why We Dance – Quality forward-thinking house grooves, will support!

Ralph Myerz – Cherry Bounce is the one for me! VERY bouncy ride indeed!!!!!

Ryan Cavanagh (Slow Hands) – Solid release! Really like Test One a lot.

Billy Scurry – Ooofff!! that test one dub is a monster!!

DJ Nutritious – Phenomenal!

Drop Out Orchestra – Test One is totally up our street (Charted Number 1)

Terry Farley – Love it!

Leftside Wobble – Such a clever spin on the Warp classic, the bleep disco scene starts here!

Tom Findlay (Groove Armada) – Test One dub is best for me.

Martin Brew – Ace EP! Loving the buzzy bass sounds on here. Meaty, beaty, big & bouncy.

Cosmic Boogie – Dub mix is grand.

The Lovely Jonjo – Love it. Doing warm up for Aeroplane tonight this Test One will do the job.

Q-Burns – Cherry Bounce is the one for me here. A cool track with some effective build moments + loads of shake. Into the musicality of “Test One” as well.

Stuart Patterson (Faith) – Love the way Test One turns into a different record.

Andy Ash – Test One is my favourite here. I like the way it changes throughout the track.

Flash Atkins – The Sweetshop Video

Life loser, failed Super Hero and dis-reputable alcoholic Flash Atkins has managed to temporarily get his shit together and use his superpowers to create a fantastic video for his brand new release, The Sweetshop.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iih_BmKL-Ew&hl=en_US&fs=1&]

The Sweetshop (Pick & Mix) has got lo-fi bass, crunchy drums and snapping synths all topped off with 70s crooner Caspa Codina’s sleazy falsetto; it’s pop music with a knowing wink and impeccable 80s credentials.

The video (http://youtube.com/flashatkins) for The Sweetshop is completely unique and turns social networking on it’s head; In a world where all the ideas have been used up, this is a NEW ONE! It takes a sideways look at Facebook / YouTube / My Space / Twitter and filters it all through the seedy world of Flash Atkins.

Remixes come from producer of the hour Medasyn with a big room electro mix complete with crowd noises, dirty distorted basslines and 80s arpeggiators Magik J does his hypnotic heads down thing with a vocal and dub suitable for those darker moments. The tracks mix up fidget, techno and house, guaranteeing full floors and thrown shapes.

The single is out on general release on March 22 but in the meantime you can hear it all on http://soundcloud.com/flash-atkins

So hop on board Flash Atkins’ booze wagon and see if we can’t chance The Sweetshop in to world domination! Flash will personally let you buy him a drink when you next pick him up out of the gutter.
