Flash Atkin – The Life and Remixes

2015 saw Flash Atkins release his debut album ‘The Life and Times’ and it’s mix of club smashers and disco nodders found people like FK, Andrew Weatherall, Horse Meat Disco, Ivan Smagghe, Rune Lindbaek and Bill Brewster getting hot under the collar.

Now comes the remix album with a collection of tracks some of which have only been out on vinyl and some not at all. It’s a roll call of who’s doing it right at the moment from the well known to the up and coming but all nail it. Names include The Revenge, The Emperor Machine, Sleazy McQueen, Pete Herbert, Tal M. Klein and Steve Cobby. Plus there’s a healthy representation from Norway in the form of Ralph Myerz, B.G.Baarregaard and Mental Overdrive. From the paper stable Leon Sweet, Doc L. Jnr step up and the elusive Jamie L turns out a 12 minute Detroit (by way of Halifax) monster.

So you’ve played the game, drunk the beer, danced to the tunes, read the fanzine, rolled your eyes at the middle aged man in tights and now you’ve got the remix album. Job done.

Craig Bratley – Great set of remixes, hard to pick a favourite.

Bill Brewster – Outstanding mixes from The Revenge and E Machine.

Situation – Get A Taxi

Making their Paper debut, we present Situation who drop a dollop of mutant disco at our door and ask to ‘Get A Taxi’.

The original has all kinds of wobbly goodness with a sultry vocal and is infectious in all the right places, a perfect mood setter.
Its a proper love in on the remix front with Goshawk kicking things off who takes a darker house route and sticks with the vocal but pairs it up with the kind of reverb drenched hits that hit you between the eyes when you walk in to a club.

Alkalino strips things down for his dub rework that goes on a hypnotic kinda route as he keeps those soaring sweeps & pads firmly in place!

Lovedrop let the sunshine in and goes for a beach bar strut that will sound lovely as you’re stretched out on that sun lounger waiting for the waiter to drop off a Mojito.

Finally Vampire Disco go straight for the neck and jack things up to dance floor with plenty of bounce by the ounce and hooks coming at you from all directions!

Pete Herbert – Yes indeed! This great, Akalino and Love Drop my favs here.

Fingerman – Good stuff! Original version is ace. Like the trippy Lovedrop mix too though.

Tronik Youth – Nice mix from Goshawk.

Dicky Trisco – Loving the squelchy funk on that original. Thanks!

Bottin’ – Alkalino dub + Love Drop are the best ones.

Severino Panzetta (Horse Meat Disco) – Great Alaklino remix.

George Summers (Midnight Riot) – Top tunes.

Bogdan Taran – Alkalino dub is very cool easy listening house music.

Deep South Audio – Cool .. slinky sleazy disco kicks …nice.

Leri Ahel (Mutant DIsco Radio Show) – All about Love Drop remix for me.

Somerville & Wilson – Fresh perfect vibes for our upcoming Splash Pool Party gig at Tropical Fruits New years day

This Is Why We Dance – Liking Goshawk mix best on first hearing.

Pathaan – DIG!

Ed Mahon (Cowbell Radio) – Original does the biz for me, Goshawk a close second and when Summer finally re-appears I’ll be playing and enjoying the Love Drop remix!

Jamie Bull – This is great. I’ve featured it in my upcoming radio show on thisiselectric.co.uk The Vampire Disco mix is the one I’ll be playing.

DJ Wrighty – Nice package, love the original and tough to pick a favourite mix out of Goshawk or Vampire Disco

Que Sakamoto – Great. I luv original.uv to play this weekend.

Rave-enka – Påfuglen EP

After providing hefty remix action for Richard Seaborne and behind the massive Gimme Some Dim Sum as one half of De Fantastiske To, Ravi Brunsvik steps up to drop his debut solo EP of the Norwegian good stuff on Paper.

Antibac kicks things off and to quote Chris in the office “it builds like an absolute bastard!”. Nearly 10 minutes of solid thunder is accompanied by jacking percussion and icy synth stabs whilst the beat just keeps on trucking. This one will grab you before you realise what’s happened.

Sur Sennep takes things to a late night discotheque located somewhere between The Hacienda and a Croatian festival. An almost acid house set up leads the way before evolving into the kind of balearic disco that can only be dreamed up in Norway. There are plenty of hooky synths, old skool keys and a bassline that squelches. Good times ahead when you unleash this..

Closing the EP off Påfuglen picks up the baton and takes things to the chill out room. Minimalistic and stripped back yet still full of enough synth squeaks, tweaks & bleeps to keep you hooked and intrigued. If Kraftwerk opened an opium den then this would surely be on their in-house playlist.

Sean Johnston – Chris Massey sent me this ages ago – I didn’t label it properly and I have been dying to know what it was – mystery solved. It’s fucking brilliant and has been a staple of 2015 ALFOS parties. KILLER!

Ron Basejam (Crazy P) – It’s a doozy.

Nutritious – This is EP is ridiculous!

Ralph Myerz – Superb stuff! All traxx rawks, very cool sound on the whole EP, full support!!

Harri (Sub Club) – Liking them all

B.G. Baarregaard – Great release!

Justin Harris – Really feeling Sur Sennep – nice one.

Julian Sanza – Good stuff, will take Pafuglen for a ride!

Fingerman – Antibac is a great little chugger!

Neil Quigley – Antibac is a killer!!!

Tronik Youth – Pafuglen for me…dark vibe

Como Las Grecas Magazine – Cool release, amazing Antibac.

Kahuun – Amazing work, full support. Antibac will be on heavy rotation.

Tici Taci Music – Antibac and Pafuglen for me…Antibac is a chug monster.

Wrighty – Loving Antibac, groovy as fuck.

Bad Barbie Beats – Cosmic chuggy loveliness.

Robot 84 – Secrets EP

e’ve not been using the C word for a while round these parts but that’s not to say we’ve gone off it. This knockout 3 track EP from Paper newcomer Robot 84 has rekindled the love of all things CHUG.

Secrets gets things rolling and is driven along by an arp bassline whilst spaced out percussion hits spin & sparkle alongside reverb drenched pads & strings that look to the stars.

If Secrets is the journey then Automatic lands you slap bang in the middle of the dance floor with a straight up, heads down house vibe. Imagine underground Manchester crossed with Baldelli’s Cosmic Club and you’re headed in the right direction.

Ego is a darker affair than its predecessors and more tuned for the 4am crowd. No messing house music, it trucks & thunders along with stubby brass sections coming in here & there, all topped off with spaced out delays & reverb to make it a worthy addition to this interstellar EP.

Support from:

Leftside Wobble – The Italo bump and grind of ‘Secrets’ is working it’s magic on me.

Tronik Youth – “Love this EP!”

Neil Diablo (El Diablo’s Social Club):
“good ep. love ego!”

Flash Atkin’s first release in ages

Flash Atkins is a drunkard, drug user and general wrong’un. A super hero who has fallen from his purple patch in the 80s to purple stains on his pants in the 00.

He is also the alter go of Paper Recordings’ Ben Davis and Levenshulme Orphanage For Boys is the first single from his forthcoming album Paper album “The Life and Times of Flash Atkins”. Each track title is named after a chapter of a short story to be published as an accompaniment to the long player.

Levenshulme Orphanage For Boys is a slo-mo tech heavy chugger that is locked down with rock sold beats and a throbbing side-chained bass. The track builds with synth lines before a sampled female vocal brings in some sparse melody and reinforces the hypnotic rhythm. An acid line adds to the tension before the reaching it’s peak with all the elements hitting home.

The Deaf Boys Dub goes down a more stripped back route with a Moog synth riff and techy hats along with the sampled vocal. Ricocheting snares herald the arrival of the sub and things crank up a gear. It’s proper 4am lose yourself in the smoke club music as the synth riff filters in and out.

Doc L. Junior is a Norwegian legend who’s not been active for a while but is back with a wallop. Deep and synthy with a hint of 80s, this is big room music that brings to mind So Get Up by Underground Sound of Lisbon.

Finally, Richard Seaborne turns in a classic sounding remix recalling Armand Van Helden in his prime. He ups the pace, adds a brutal bottom end, chucks in a jazz break on top of the acid and vocal and it’s dance floor dynamite.

François K – ‘Flashing Thunder dub is great, will definitely give this one some plays.’
Peter Kruder – – ‘Love the Original. Doc L Juniors Flashing Thunder dub is also cool. The Richard Seaborne mix also works for me’

Rave-enka – Rett I Kroppen EP

Noway keep coming up with producers who offer something fresh and exciting in a world where rave by numbers is often the norm. The next one to look out for is De Fantastiske To’s Rave-enka who mixes up techno, house and disco into a unique arctic stew as this EP perfectly demonstrates.

Rett I Kroppen is an epic disco-tech number purpose built from the ground up for maximum dance floor damage. It’s all about the release and build of the horn and string heavy sample for a track that can cross genres and comes off like a Paperclip People for 2016.

Honningen is just perfect house music; using the raw ingredients of a groove that swings and sample it demonstrates why the best ideas are often the simplest. Add in an arp, some filtering, a dash of Detroit plus dynamics and you have something that sounds like a Scandinavian Moodymann track.

Rett I Fletta brings in a 90s Strictly vibe but keeps things stripped back. Garage drums and analogue bass drive it along before cutting to a pure NYC synth stab for a Sound Factory Bar kind of joint.

Finally, the man who can, Richard Seaborne takes Honningen and beefs things up. With added vocal samples there is no way this can miss and he takes it back to a similar place as his Todd Terje and Tensnake rocking Is This Acid? Expect similar results.

Rave-enka is busy in his bunker recording us an album so expect more block rockers in 2016.

Sleazy McQueen – “Too far gone, Norway back”

Harri (Sub CLub) – “Liking a few of these, full support”
