The hardest working man in showbiz (Cal Gibson) is back with four wonky Balearic-not-Balearic wobblers, cementing his reputation as one of the UK’s best producers of downtempo, leftfield grooves.
Love Tracks loads a sample into the funk machine and presses the big red button. What comes out the other end has dub EFX, vocal samples, and delays aplenty for a trip into 70s disco space, next up, Is It Daylight? takes the groove deep with shimmering synths and tripped out arpeggiated samples. Late night, hypnotic and mesmerising. Female Planet takes Compass Point as the starting line and does a hard left. 80s bass, dub, broken beats, disco and female empowerment blend into underground party music wearing a smile. Finally, ‘Scared of Dub’ a murky motorik beat, busted synths and congas come off as organic, soulful kosmische, laying the bed for the heartfelt, plaintive vocals.

ABOUT Super FU
The three-piece powerhouse that is Super FU, with members Sarah Lazenby, Paul Withy, and Rich Hall, returns to Paper with another long player of Balearic disco brilliance. Their Physical Sounds album tips its hat to a wide range of genres and influences, with hints of space disco, psychedelia, synth heavy electronica and the kind of pop that harks back to the glory days of Ibiza. There are hints of the best record collections’ best bits: Crazy P, LCD Soundsystem, Street Sounds Compilations, Prince and Sabres Of Paradise, whilst still totally unique, thanks to the slick sounds, superb production and arrangements. This is an album to soundtrack European car journeys, sunset alfresco gigs, late-night parties, and the after-hours. It is spellbinding, catchy as hell, and beautiful through and through.
