Richard Seaborne – Girl Music EP

1. Date Night
2. I Know You Love Me
3. Belle Choses

Richard Seaborne is back with a three track EP that oozes deep disco and demonstrating why he is a producer to watch. Always armed with an unexpected vocal and crisp production, big things are round the corner.

Richard first appeared on Paper with The Reasons Why. It was deadpan take-down of a former lover that rocked the floors of Aeroplane, Horsemeat Disco, Doc Martin, Roberto Rodriguez, Eric Duncan and Tensnake to name just a few.

Date Night kicks things off and is a hypnotic deep house nagger with a recurring delayed synth stab that filters in and out. Set over Richard’s swinging drums it works the groove with a crushed vocal to add melody and intrigue. Suitable for beard strokers and disco queens alike.

I Know You Love Me has gorgeous reverbed percussion over disco beats and a feel good sample. Add an easy listening vocal that sounds like it’s never belonged anywhere else and you’ve got a timeless track that is deceptively deadly!

To round things off Belle Choses finds it’s groove in a locked down disco sample and drives that bad boy all the way home! With live broken house beats it draws you in with it’s repetitiveness, off set by filtering, disco toms, camp vocal, samples and efx firing off for detonation!

Justin Harris feat. Laura Vane – “Breathe 1,2,3” – Out Now!

PAPDLS151
Justin Harris feat. Laura Vane – 1,2 3 Breathe
1. Original
2. House Mix
3. House Dub
4. Down Tempo Mix

Justin Harris, an acid house warrior since 1987 finally arrives on Paper with his debut release 1,2,3 Breathe. His CV boasts gigs at clubs like Panorama Bar, Fabric, The End, Back To Basics and Robert Johnson and remixes for The Human League, Tiefshwartz and Mathew Herbert on labels like Classic, SWAG, Crosstown Rebels and 20 20 Vision. Amongst his many collaborations, Freaks with Luke Solomon is best know for their leftfield take on house and groundbreaking label MFF.

Breathe 1,2,3 is deep house with a soul that has a stamp of quality running through it like a stick of Blackpool rock. Minimal drums, analogue bass, piano and synth strings set things up for Laura Vane’s heart felt and timeless vocals.

The house mix ups drive and tempo but retains the deepness. Along with additional classic house stabs, the piano and strings give the track some nice chord progressions as the vocals tell their story.

The dub strips things back even more with the vocal stabbing and out as the music unfolds.

Finally, the down tempo mix breaks things right down for a lush version that aims at the hairs on your back of you neck and hits.

Sean Johnston (A Love From Outer Space) – Very good indeed!

Sleazy McQueen -I ‘m feeling the midtempo vibes, for sure!

2 Billion Beats – Noise In Your Eye / Full Moon Boogie

Here is the first EP in a double header to mark Paper’s 150th single release.

2 Billion Beats’ Tom and Col have been sat in their studio wearing Day-Glo and high tops waiting for the invention of the hoverboard to no avail. So to kill time they cranked up their collection of 80s synths, set to work and came up with a couple of tracks that could soundtrack Summer 2013.

Noise In Your Eye is a BIG floor disco track that plugs an LCD Soundsystem shaped hole. So much so that it was played by James Murphy at The Warehouse Project this Christmas. The mystery is, nobody knew how he got hold of it but a wayward licensing CD is thought to be the culprit!

Heavy 4/4 beats and a locked down bass start things off before the piano is intro-ed, followed by strings and the sample weaving it’s way in and out. With synth noodlings, the track keeps building before it breaks for the chord change and all sorts of mayhem breaks out.

Full Moon Boogie is on a similar tip of 80s inspired disco and it’s all about the piano at the end. A stuttering synth bass and nagging top line build tension until 2/3rds through when it drops to a piano that’s been nicked from the middle of The Hacienda’s dancefloor at 1.30am on a Saturday night in 1993.

Ralph Myerz – REALLY digging Noise In Your Eye. I’m a huge fan of 2 Billion Beats but really feel that they have taken their stuff to the next level with this release. Full support from me for a looooong time!

The Glimmers – Love it!

Tensnake – Both tracks deliver, nice disco jams

Cowbell Radio – Two of the best tunes of 2013, no doubt, both have been massive on Cowbell. Noise in your Eye just gets the nod, but Full Moon Boogie is a proper ‘break glass in case of emergency’ dance-floor filler! Amazing work fellas!

Severino Panzetta (Horsemeat Disco) – Pretty cool.

Ryan Cavanagh – Nice release, love both.

Daniel Solar – Noise in your Eye for me.

Wrighty (Soul Buggin) – Noise In Your Eye has got Soul Buggin’ written all over it, nice work.

Flash Atkins Juno Review

Juno

“Paper Recordings chief Flash Atkins is a friendly sort of chap, and in recent times has spent has evenings locked in the studio with some of the label’s lesser-known names. Here, he delivers the fruit of those labours: a collaborative EP featuring a trio of new cuts. “Wilco”, with 2 Billion Beats, begins as a chunky, low-slung, disco-influenced house number, before morphing into a Moroder-ish chunk of electronic disco madness. CP hook-up “Malawi Chant” (also available in stripped-back Dub form) is a breezy afrobeat affair – all undulating rhythms, darting organs and African chants. Finally, “Calieo Square”, with Havana Candy, is an atmosphere, picturesque slither of melodic nu-disco.”

Flash Atkins – Collaborations # 1

Flash Atkins, hero to some but a waste of taxpayers money to most. But between drinking, smoking, drugging and drinking again he has found time to get in the studio with some fellow producers from the Paper stable.

He goes head to head with young bucks and 80s house merchants 2 Billion Beats in a tribute to legendary guitarist, Wilco Johnson. Starting with a sampled Dr Feelgood bass it builds up with acid tweeks and arps before a digital pad takes it to the drop. It’s then that the NRG takes off in a 70s pub rock / Giorgio Moroder / house hybrid.

Next up Flash enlists Hebden Bridge local hero, DJ and promoter CP (known to his Mum as Chris Price). It kicks off with a group of men singing on their way to work that was recorded by Flash in Malawi (true story). For the track they have enlisted the cream of Yorkshire’s musicians with live keys, trumpet, percussion and bass for a soulful afro house sound. When the pads come in the second half it takes off!

The dub keeps the bones of the track but adds electronics for an arpeggiated deep house mix with enough grunt to satisfy the most heads down floors. It ebbs and flows as synths and reverbs filter in and out and a piano give it a techno hook.

Finally Flash hooks up with Havana Candy (who has recently been seen on Tusk Wax as Causa) for Calieo Square. This is a deeper and dreamier affair that sounds like the Wamdue Kids in their heyday. Shimmering percussion, synth washes, analogue keys and arps weave a deep house soundscape for heads and feet alike.
